Toddlers seem to really enjoy experiencing a substance (like clay, water, paint, or food) on their bodies/skin - which gets messy, quick. School is the perfect place to present the opportunity to get messy like this. Without knowing a material in this way - understanding how it feels in the hands or on the feet or on the cheaks - I would imagine that it is difficult for students to use a substance (like paint) in the way it was more-so intended to be used. I find this to be particular of paint especially. It is a hope of mine, that by allowing for a period of time devoted to such an indulgence/ urge, that students will satisfy this itch, and move on to use the substance in a different way.
